Beware of autumn OWIs

Fall is a beautiful time here in Anderson, and there are certainly many activities in and around town going on for residents and visitors alike. But the season is not without its challenges.

For instance, now is a time for an uptick in operating while intoxicated (OWI) arrests. Read on to learn more about why these arrests occur now and how you can avoid the situation.

People are out enjoying the season

A lot is going on during October. High school and college homecoming games and dances, bonfires, hayrides, corn mazes and haunted houses are all part of the lead-up to Halloween.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying all the celebrations that the season has to offer. But for many, these activities include alcohol consumption — and that’s where the problems can begin.

Police patrols increase

Law enforcement is aware that people tend to drink and drive during these events, and their goal is to keep the public safe from drunken drivers. You may notice an increased police presence at and around the activities because police are on the alert for signs of inebriated drivers.

Avoiding an arrest is best

Use public transit or rideshare services when heading out for a night of autumn partying. A sober driver is also a good option to choose if you plan to drink.

If you do get arrested for OWI, the costs can be far-reaching and steep. Remember that an OWI case begins at the traffic stop. Never act belligerently or disrespect the law enforcement officer. Remember to invoke your right against self-incrimination and don’t answer police questions until you have spoken to your defense counsel.
